I am a Fine Art Photographer working and living in New York City. Having grown up in and around the arts, becoming an artist was a foregone conclusion. My influences started with painters (and to this day I tell anyone who will listen if they want to learn photography, go look at paintings), the concerned photographers of the 30’s and 40’s, the Westons – father and sons, Ansel Adams, Roy de Carava, Bruce Davidson, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke White, Cartier-Bresson, et al.
I have come to believe that the digital methods in use today have expanded and widened the range of expression available to any artist, especially photographers. Digital printing has taken me away from the unpredictability of the darkroom (same brand and grade of paper – unless they were all from the same emulsion lot – different results) to a stable, repeatable, inked process. Since I don’t use glossy paper, the image has an organic presence lacking in the gelatin-silver process. Because digital cameras can detect a color range greater than the human eye can detect I have a much larger palette to work from.
My goal is to transcend photography and make the image all important. The challenge I present myself is this: since almost anyone can make beautiful images in places like Monument Valley, find the beauty and power of the people, places and things that are within relatively easy reach.
