NUCLEAR LANDSCAPE by Katherine Widen

Katherine Widen's notion of landscape is informed by nineteenth century landscape painting. For this work, she gained inspiration from the alienation in April Gornik’s work and Caspar David Friedrich's iconic painting "Monk by the Sea." Widen added a modern twist to these works with her abstracted, human-altered landscapes. She used several photographs of landscapes to create a banal and nonspecific environmental vignette.

Katherine was born the third of five children in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and now lives and works in Cleveland. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art. In 2009,  she was awarded a full fellowship to complete an artist's residency at the Vermont Studio Center.

The original "Nuclear Landscape" is an 12" x 9" oil painting on masonite board.
