I make paintings where from distant viewing the image reads as a thing, and when viewed closely the image diffracts into marks of paint. I juxtapose painting styles and fragments to disrupt fluid reading of the painting, and use textures separated into dense waxy paint edges, relief, and glossy surfaces.
I create art that displays tension between contradictions, through their literal reading and the physicality of the paint. My recent work is focused on utilizing landscapes to do this. I paint from photographs reminiscent of archetypical nineteenth century landscape paintings. This work evolved from the phrase "improving the landscape" which is coined to be satirical, and highlight the multiple connotations of "landscape" and what "improving" means. The paintings are composite landscapes translated into the language of painting.
